RICH KITSCH
Jewelry is precious. Jewelry carries meaning. Jewelry holds a special place in our hearts. And there is a strong attachment to the fine pieces of jewelry we buy, which is why we must do everything in our power to maintain their shine.
Daily grime can get the best of your gemstones, making them look dull and dirty. It is important to clean your jewelry pieces every now and then to preserve their look and feel over time.
Here are some jewelry care tips to help you maintain the stunning appeal of your fine jewelry.
This may seem obvious to most of you, but how and where you store your jewelry is the utmost important step in handling jewelry. Don’t toss your jewelry anywhere; place your pieces in a fabric case or jewelry box with compartments. If you don’t have one on hand, wrap each piece in soft tissue before placing it in a drawer. This will prevent it from getting scratched or tangled.
Precious metals like gold, silver, and platinum are not invincible when it comes to harmful chemicals. Hairspray, lotion, and perfume can damage certain types of metals, leaving them susceptible to discoloration over time. It is best to avoid wearing your jewelry while getting ready and only wear your items once you are set to walk out the door.
Most gems can be cleaned with a simple solution made of warm water and mild dish soap. Scrub each item with a soft brush and watch its shine take over. Make sure to rinse your jewelry before placing them on a lint-free cloth to dry. If your jewelry item is made of pearls, use a new makeup brush and warm water with soap to clean them. Otherwise, they will scratch.
Avoid wearing your jewelry to the beach, swimming pool, gym, or while doing everyday chores. You never know what might go wrong. After all, you don’t want to risk losing your favorite pieces. Store your jewelry items in a safe place while you engage in any activity that may seem risky.
You might not know this, but light and heat can damage the durability and color of some colored gemstones. Pearls, for example, will bleach over constant exposure to light. Amber, on the other hand, will darken in color over extreme exposure to light.
